Novi Sad Appellate Court on Results in 2017: Courts Still Overburdened

With the support of the USAID Rule of Law Project, the Appellate Court in Novi Sad organized the presentation of its 2017 annual report, reflecting also the performance of basic and higher courts operating under its jurisdiction. President of the Novi Sad Appellate Court, Novica Peković, addressed the court presidents and media representatives and emphasized that the courts from the territory of the Novi Sad appellate jurisdiction decided in some 400.000 cases in 2017, clearing the incoming caseload which amounted to 370.000 cases.

"Faced with a constant incoming caseload, increased especially in the higher courts, slowed down process of appointment to judicial function, and the ongoing fluctuation in the number of judicial and non-judicial staff, the courts have, as evidenced by the results, invested significant efforts in improving their work and have successfully fulfilled their role", Novica Peković, Novi Sad Appellate Court President

Dragomir Milojević, president of the Supreme Court of Cassation also addressed the participants of the event. As he pointed out, ‘there ae 4 million cases before courts in Serbia, so if we take into account that there are at least 2 parties to every case, that means that every citizen of Serbia has some business with the court. That is why it is never too late to present the results of the work of the courts as they have to inform the public on matters that concern the citizens very much’. Deputy president of the Novi Sad Appellate Court, Jelica Bojanić-Kerkez, presented the annual report, the conditions in which the courts operated in the past year, trends observed with incoming cases, and measures implemented to dispose of the backlog. She particularly emphasized that for the past four years the average duration of a case in the courts in Vojvodina has been desreased from 162 days in 2014 to 95 days in 2017.

The President of the Novi Sad Appellate Court, Novica Peković, stated that courts invest efforts to clear cases but they are at the same time overburdened.
